The British royal family faced repercussions from King Charles when he revoked Prince Andrew’s titles due to his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted sex offender. Trump expressed his sorrow and said he feels “extremely bad” for the family.

Buckingham Palace announced Thursday that Andrew, now officially known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, will also be required to vacate the Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate where he has resided for many years.

This decision was driven by concerns within the royal family about the damaging fallout from ongoing news stories linking Mountbatten-Windsor to Epstein, who was a convicted sex offender. One of Epstein’s victims, Virginia Giuffre, even accused the former prince of sexual assault.

During a Sunday evening press conference, Trump, who was previously friends with Epstein before his presidency, was asked about King Charles’s decision to strip Andrew of his titles.

“I truly feel bad,” Trump said. “The family has been through an awful ordeal. It’s really unfortunate. I feel for them.”

Trump has often spoken highly of Britain’s royal family. Notably, during his second visit to the UK in September, he lauded the “special relationship” between the US and Britain and had warm words to say about King Charles.

However, Epstein’s death in a New York jail in 2019 has recent months complicated Trump’s political landscape. It’s been widely reported that Trump was acquainted with Epstein, and several photographs depicting Trump and Epstein were shown on Windsor Castle just before Trump’s welcoming by King Charles in September. The display included a soundtrack that mocked their connection.

Further scrutiny has fallen on Mountbatten-Windsor’s ties to Epstein after new emails and a biography, published following Giuffre’s death at age 41 in April, revealed damaging details. In her book, she recounted being coerced into sexual acts with the former prince on three occasions, including when she was 17, during what she described as an orgasmic experience after Epstein allegedly endangered her. She claimed Mountbatten-Windsor thought that having sex with her was his “birthright.”

Despite these allegations, it’s important to clarify that, at 65, Mountbatten-Windsor has never been confirmed to have had sex with Giuffre while she was 17. He agreed to pay her £12 million (approximately $16 million) to settle the lawsuit, but he did not admit guilt.

Most recently, UK Defense Secretary John Healey announced that Mountbatten-Windsor would lose his last naval honor, granted in 2015, following Giuffre’s lawsuit. His mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, had already revoked his other military titles earlier this year.

On Friday, a Democratic Congressman called for Mountbatten-Windsor to testify before a U.S. House committee investigating the government’s dealings with Epstein.

The case attracted renewed attention in July after the Justice Department stated that the famed list of Epstein’s sex-trafficking clients was nonexistent and declared they would no longer release additional information related to the case.
