Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Unite in Enchanting Sequel to Wicked
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are set to captivate audiences once again in the highly anticipated sequel, Wicked: For Good. In this follow-up, Grande steps into the iconic role of Glinda, the Good Witch, while Erivo reprises her powerful portrayal of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.
This new installment picks up after the pivotal moment when Elphaba and Glinda decide to part ways, diving into the years that follow their separation. Glinda has ascended to the status of a public figure, working under the Wizard’s rule, whereas Elphaba finds herself opposing the authority of Oz.
The latest trailer reveals a poignant scene where Glinda gazes out from her balcony, a cracked window behind her, as Elphaba emerges from the shadows. Additionally, there are hints that Dorothy might play a more significant role in the film, diverging from her depiction in the original musical, although the actress cast for the part has yet to be disclosed.
In a striking visual, Elphaba takes to the sky on her broomstick, inscribing the phrase “Our wizard lies” across the azure skies. This highlights the growing hostility against her, as depicted by an angry mob chasing her with torches.
An emotional twist in the narrative sees Glinda sending Elphaba a heartfelt note, wishing her, “I hope you get what your heart desires.” The trailer culminates with Elphaba enthusiastically proclaiming her intent to "see the Wizard," taking off into the horizon alongside her winged companions.
Director Jon M. Chu elaborates on the story, emphasizing that the sequel explores the ramifications of Glinda’s choices from the first film. He describes Elphaba’s journey as one of empowerment, especially as she seeks to distance herself from societal expectations.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s renowned 1995 novel and inspired by the hit Broadway and West End musical, the Wicked films will be released in two parts. The second film is slated for release on November 21.
Production faced interruptions due to the Hollywood actors’ strike, with filming conducted simultaneously at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire from December 2022 to January 2024.
The original Wicked film garnered ten Oscar nominations, including Best Costume and Production Design, and became the highest-grossing movie in the UK in 2024. The first film closely mirrored its stage counterpart, lasting nearly two hours and forty minutes.
Stay tuned for more updates on this enchanting journey as Grande and Erivo breathe life into these beloved characters once again!
