A new update from Digital Phablet reveals five enhancements Google has introduced to improve web page linking from its AI Mode and AI Overviews. Some of these features had been tested earlier and received positive feedback, leading Google to officially implement them.
According to Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product Management at Google, these improvements aim to make it easier for users to connect with authentic voices and explore valuable information. She explained that Google is continuously refining how links are displayed and ranked in its generative AI search experiences, utilizing techniques like query fan-out to delve deeper into the web and identify the most relevant sites for each query. The company plans to keep testing, learning, and optimizing these features based on user feedback.
The five key changes are as follows:
-
Suggestions at the End of AI Responses: Users will notice recommended links for further exploration at the conclusion of many AI-generated answers. These suggestions direct to unique articles or detailed analyses related to the topic, making it easier to satisfy curiosity and deepen understanding.
-
Highlighting News Subscriptions: Links from users’ news subscriptions will be emphasized within AI responses, allowing quick access to trusted content. Subscription linking can be implemented using Google’s provided documentation, and early testing showed a significant increase in clicks on labeled subscription links.
-
Including Names and Handles for Online Discussions: AI responses will now display a preview of perspectives from public online discussions, social media, and other firsthand sources. Additional context, such as a creator’s name, handle, or community identifier, will help users decide which discussions to read or join.
-
Displaying Links Near Relevant Text: Google will present more links directly within AI responses, positioned close to the relevant sections of text, improving contextual navigation.
-
Hover-over Website Previews: When browsing on a desktop, hovering over an inline link in AI responses will trigger a quick preview of the target website. This preview provides helpful details like the site’s name or page title, assisting users in determining whether to click through.
These updates aim to enhance user experience by making AI-generated search results more helpful, transparent, and easier to navigate.
