On May 12, the first aviation-themed science fiction park in the country officially began construction in Shanghai’s Lingang New Area. Known as the Nantianmen Project’s Shanghai 288 Base, this marks the start of a new major cultural and technological tourism hub in Lingang.
The Shanghai 288 Base is a key part of the Nantianmen Project, an original aviation sci-fi intellectual property developed by AVIC Global Culture Communication, a subsidiary of China’s aviation industry giant.
A preview zone, featuring a hangar that houses two futuristic fighter jets named “Baidi” and “Xuannv,” was opened to industry insiders yesterday. The main construction of the amusement park is expected to finish by the end of this year, with plans to officially open on August 1, 2027.
This initiative aligns closely with Shanghai’s 15th Five-Year Plan, emphasizing digital cultural tourism, commercial aerospace, artificial intelligence, and smart robotics. By harnessing Lingang’s strengths in aerospace, AI, and digital tourism, the project aims to become China’s first immersive aviation sci-fi cultural tourism destination and a key attraction in Lingang’s overall tourism industry, supporting Shanghai’s ambition to develop into a globally influential hub for culture and technological innovation.
An estimated one-and-a-half to two hours is needed for a full visit to the park, explained Zhou Yixiao, head of the Nantianmen Project in Shanghai. Visitors can dive into thrilling storylines, work, combat, and live alongside the staff, explore outer space scenarios, build friendships, and eventually return to Earth.
To boost the project’s presence, a seminar for film industry experts was held to discuss the possibility of creating a sci-fi film based on the intellectual property. The event also examined the potential of a combined “theme park + film” model to develop a comprehensive industry ecosystem, integrating IP development, real-world experiences, and film distribution.
