Meituan has introduced an Errand Skill feature that enables users to place orders through various third-party AI assistants integrated with its new errand ordering system.
By making errand-ordering capabilities available to the AI assistant ecosystem as a packaged skill, the company has standardized this function for direct AI access. Users can now command compatible AI assistants to place orders without needing to open the main application.
Regarding user adoption, long-term and stable utilization hinges on broader acceptance and use of the AI assistant platform. As AI helpers become more common and their features more advanced, users will increasingly be able to place orders directly through these tools, bypassing the need to open specific apps.
Allowing third-party AI assistants to access its Errand Skill highlights how AI functionalities are being commercialized in consumer-oriented services. This approach isn’t about sharing the underlying AI models but involves modularizing mature capabilities like task scheduling and order placement. These modules are then embedded into mainstream AI assistants to quickly translate technological innovations into practical consumer solutions.
Leveraging AI with end-user applications can enhance the company’s competitiveness, but there’s still progress to be made before establishing a clear market advantage. Competitors such as Alibaba’s integrated delivery platform, supported by its e-commerce network, and ByteDance’s ecosystem — which features intelligent fulfillment services and AI assistants — are also vying for a share of the market.
