A subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation recently delivered the world’s largest roll-on/roll-off vehicle carrier in terms of cargo capacity to South Korea’s leading container shipping company, HMM, formerly known as Hyundai Merchant Marine.
The vessel, named Glovis Leader, was handed over during a ceremony in Guangzhou’s Nansha district. Following the delivery, the ship was immediately transferred to its operator, Hyundai Glovis, which is jointly owned by Hyundai Motor and Kia. The Chinese shipyard announced the completion on the same day.
Glovis Leader features 14 car decks and can carry up to 10,800 vehicles, offering versatile transport options for electric, hydrogen-powered, and other environmentally friendly vehicles, as well as large trucks and various other models.
The vessel cruises at a service speed of 19 knots and is powered by a dual-fuel propulsion system that runs on liquefied natural gas and marine diesel oil. It fully meets the Tier III emission standards set by the International Maritime Organization, highlighting its superior environmental performance, energy efficiency, and safety features.
This ship, along with four sister ships expected to be delivered soon and three earlier handed-over 8,600-car carriers from last year, provides HMM with a strong foundation for expanding its vehicle shipping operations, according to the company’s president.
The Guangzhou shipyard has secured over 40 orders for pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs). To date, it has constructed and delivered 19 vessels capable of transporting 7,000 vehicles each, six ships with 8,600-car capacity, and one LNG/MDO dual-fuel ro-ro vessel with an 10,800-vehicle capacity, enabling nearly 200,000 vehicle transports for international automotive trade.
The company’s total contract value exceeds 1 trillion Chinese yuan (approximately USD 137.5 billion), with over 95 percent of orders from international clients. Its production schedule is fully booked through 2030.
