The world’s largest integrated green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol project, developed by a leading Chinese energy infrastructure company, has officially started operations in Jilin Province, northeastern China. This project signifies a major advancement in the convergence of renewable energy and chemical manufacturing.

Located in Songyuan City, the Qingqing No. 1 facility has a total planned investment nearing CNY30 billion (approximately $4.3 billion). It aims to install three million kilowatts of wind and solar power capacity, supporting the production of green synthetic ammonia and methanol with a combined annual output of 800,000 tons, according to recent reports.

The project operates on a model where electricity generated from wind and solar farms is transmitted to a chemical industrial park. There, water is electrolyzed to produce hydrogen, which is then converted into ammonia and methanol through well-established chemical processes. This setup facilitates long-term storage and transportation of green energy to international markets.

The initial phase, now operational, features 800,000 kilowatts of renewable energy capacity and facilities capable of producing 200,000 tons of green synthetic ammonia and methanol annually. Once fully developed, this phase is projected to eliminate approximately 600,000 tons of coal consumption and reduce carbon emissions by 1.4 million tons annually.

Addressing the challenge of balancing the intermittent nature of wind and solar power with the steady demands of chemical production, the project team has implemented advanced technologies such as Big Data and artificial intelligence. These tools enable real-time adjustments to hydrogen and chemical processing loads based on renewable energy output, ensuring uninterrupted production while maximizing renewable energy utilization.

In 2023, China has stepped up its efforts to promote a green and low-carbon energy transition. The country’s renewable energy-based hydrogen production capacity has surpassed 220,000 tons annually—more than half of the global green hydrogen capacity—while the combined annual capacity of green ammonia and methanol has reached around one million tons, according to officials at the National Energy Administration.
