There are plenty of AI tools out there designed for learning, yet surprisingly, Google’s AI Studio doesn’t sit on that list. However, don’t let that fool you; AI Studio is an incredible learning resource. I tested it out as my personal tutor, and I was amazed by the results.
What Is Google’s AI Studio?
Google’s AI Studio is a versatile web-based platform that empowers developers to create and experiment with various large language models (LLMs) built on Google’s Gemini technology. If you’re familiar with Gemini, which competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, you’re already on the right track in grasping what AI Studio offers.
Although the platform is primarily aimed at developers creating products using various APIs from Google’s Gemini LLM, its web-based format enables anyone, even non-developers like myself, to enjoy its remarkable features.
AI Studio boasts several capabilities, including the option to ask questions and customize your AI model. One standout feature is Stream Realtime, which enables real-time interaction with Gemini through text, voice, video, and even screen sharing. This functionality makes AI Studio an essential tool for students.
Using Google’s AI Studio as My Tutor
The primary feature I rely on for tutoring is Stream Realtime. Its live interaction aspect makes learning feel like having a professional expert right beside you. To get started, simply select Stream Realtime from the left tab in AI Studio.
Once you’re in that tab, AI Studio provides three main options: converse with Gemini, show Gemini what you’re viewing through your webcam, or share your screen. While you can also engage in text-based conversation, I prefer screen sharing, as it enhances interactivity and personalization, two factors essential for effective learning.
For example, if you’d like to learn how to perform basic calculations in Google Sheets, you’d start by opening a sheet with sample data in a separate tab. Next, you’d select the Share your screen feature in the Stream Realtime tab. Choose whether to share a specific tab, window, or your entire screen, and make sure to give Gemini permission to access your microphone for audio input before opening the Google Sheet tab.
After you have that set up, you’ll want to confirm that Gemini can see your screen by speaking to your device. Once confirmed, feel free to ask Gemini any questions regarding the spreadsheet, and it will guide you with step-by-step instructions on how to complete your tasks.
For instance, you can see Gemini confirming that it can indeed view my screen and even recognizes that I have a spreadsheet open.
Once that’s established, you can inquire about any operations you want to perform in the spreadsheet, and Gemini will assist you just like a knowledgeable expert would. Although Gemini is already integrated into Google Sheets, using it through AI Studio provides a better experience. The only downside currently is that Google limits sessions to ten minutes, which can feel restrictive depending on your needs.
The previously mentioned example—learning how to do calculations in Google Sheets—is just one possibility. The fact that AI Studio can see your screen means it can assist you with a wide range of tasks. For example, if you work as an accountant, AI Studio can provide valuable guidance on various tasks you may need help with.
If you’re a student, the live interaction feature of AI Studio can help simplify the comprehension of scientific papers and also enhance your presentation skills. Just share your work using the screen-sharing functionality of Stream Realtime, and Gemini will offer insights and assistance for almost anything you need on your device.
After utilizing Google’s AI Studio to learn how to conduct calculations in Google Sheets and interpret dense scientific literature, I can confidently say it is a vital tool for acquiring knowledge on nearly any topic. Whenever I need to learn something new, I will undoubtedly turn to AI Studio to streamline and enrich the process.
