In Code Vein 2, you’re in a world that’s already on the brink of falling apart. The seals holding back the dangerous Resurgence are weakening, and your goal is to eliminate it permanently. To do this, you need to go back in time and meet the legendary heroes of the past. Sometimes, you only get brief moments with them. It would be nice if there was a peaceful time in between the past and present—an interval where everything is calm.
What Is the Free Exploration Era?
The Free Exploration Era is pretty straightforward. It takes place before or after many major events involving the heroes of the past, before they become seals for the Resurgence. During this time, they’re all just hanging out. The world during the Free Exploration Era feels more like the past than the present, offering you the chance to explore freely all over the world from that era without being restricted to specific areas tied to each hero’s timeline.
Since it’s mainly a relaxing space without a story or secret areas, exploring it isn’t necessary for the main plot. It’s mostly for hanging out with past allies and finding some neat items along the way.
When Do You Unlock the Free Exploration Era?
After you defeat your first hero, likely Josée, you’re asked to go back to MagMell to rest before moving on to the next hero. When you return, you’ll notice a new Bond appears at the back of the hall, at the top of the stairs—this is what unlocks the Free Exploration Era. Starting from that point, you can travel back and forth between the Present and the Free Exploration Era whenever you want, as long as you’re in the Present Era.
You can only access this bond when you’re in the Present Era, so you’ll need to exit any hero’s timeline before jumping into the free exploration space.
What Can You Do In the Free Exploration Era?
This era is great for exploration, but you might still wonder why you’d bother. The Present Era holds most quests and the main story, after all. Still, the Free Exploration Era has plenty to offer. It features nearly every companion you’ve met, including some unique ones, plus other small extras.
Partners you meet during your past adventures can appear here once you finish their storylines. They show up as playable partners, often with upgraded Blood Codes, and they can have new quests, gifts, or collaborations. Some characters, like Valentin, are exclusive to this era.
Quests
Although the Free Exploration Era doesn’t have a main story, it offers many side quests related to the partners. These missions take you across the whole map and are often quite varied. For instance, Valentin’s quests involve finding portals to close paradoxes, while Josée’s quests might have you searching for spices to recreate her mother’s dish. These quests come with fun stories and rewards you can’t get elsewhere.
Exploration
While exploring the past and present share the same world, each has differences. These include visual styles, NPCs you can talk to, enemies, and the materials you find. The Free Exploration Era allows you to fully explore the world as it once was, during the time of the heroes, without restrictions. You’ll never miss out on items—whether they’re hidden chests or enemy drops.
As you progress through the main story, new locations open up in the Free Exploration Era. Marks or Mistles activated in one timeframe stay active across all eras, making exploration seamless.
No Story
There’s no overarching story in the Free Exploration Era. It’s a relaxed space for you to do whatever you want, with only partner quests guiding your activity. This means you can miss some options based on choices made earlier in the game, but those will still be accessible here. The main story only influences when heroes become available as companions.
