In Information Technology Operations (ITOps), physical and virtual components of your IT infrastructure are acquired, designed, deployed, configured, and maintained.

Among the four core functions of ITSM, ITOps is one of the most important. The other three are application management, service desk, and technical management. Service desks respond to queries from employees and customers, application management is responsible for designing and developing applications, and technical management is responsible for providing technical expertise regarding the organization’s IT infrastructure.

ITOps is responsible for setting up the hardware and maintaining the facilities in which the hardware is housed. In addition to managing the hybrid cloud, these responsibilities also include the management of the applications deployed on the cloud. In addition, they are also responsible for configuring and documenting the various components of the system.

The following are some of the most common ITOps roles in an enterprise IT organization:

  • The Operations Engineer is responsible for managing operations for the implementation of an ITSM framework, application deployment, and optimization of ITSM framework best practices.
  • It is the responsibility of the Operations Manager to oversee the design and implementation of ITOps from a business and technical perspective.

  • Business Architects are responsible for interpreting organizational policies, risks, and goals and for bridging the gap between strategy and implementation.   • An IT systems integrator is responsible for designing, building, and synthesizing all subsystems that make up an IT service or solution as a whole.
  • In the role of Incident and Security Manager, strategies and systems are developed to minimize risk and maximize the reliability of an IT service.
  • An applications analyst monitors, administers, and maintains software applications, interacting data, and underlying IT infrastructure.
  • It is the responsibility of the Technical/Systems Analyst to analyze how IT systems, solutions and applications relate to the business needs of the organization. Analyzes and defines system performance, standards, and problems.
  • The Network Administrator is responsible for configuring systems, identifying and resolving network issues, maintaining and managing network resources, and budgeting.
  • IT Operators deploy, install, and configure devices for users. Fixing issues, replacing equipment, or upgrading it in response to service requests.

ITOps have an estimated average salary of $120K – $190K.

ITOps vs DevOps

Understanding the essence of both practices reveals the reason for the conflict between ITOps and DevOps. DevOps focuses on the task at hand, unlike ITOps, which examines the entire technology landscape on which your organization relies to conduct its business operations. Often, DevOps teams are unaware of the downstream implications on the enterprise stack. (This is where a modern IT operations team can be of assistance.)

I do not mean to criticize either ITOps or DevOps. Under traditional ITOM, this is the way it is. Though the two disciplines should complement one another, the reality is that IT environments are so diverse—from legacy systems on-premises to cutting-edge cloud services—that IT management and cultural inertia keep the two disciplines apart, despite their complementary nature. Every day, they are faced with the same challenges:

  • Silos within the organization
  • Models with multiple dimensions
  • There is a lack of complete and contextual visibility necessary to diagnose and resolve problems as they arise as quickly as possible
