KARACHI: The first total lunar eclipse of the year is scheduled for March 14, as reported by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). Unfortunately, this astronomical event will not be visible from Pakistan.

According to the PMD, the eclipse will begin at 8:57 a.m. Pakistan Standard Time (PST), with the moon fully obscured by the Earth at 11:26 a.m.

The height of the eclipse will occur at 11:59 a.m. and will gradually conclude by 3:00 p.m.

This total lunar eclipse marks the third full moon of the year, commonly referred to as the ‘Worm Moon.’

As highlighted by the BBC, many full moons are given names that correspond to significant events in nature.

Specifically, the Worm Moon in March indicates the onset of warmer temperatures, as earthworms begin to emerge from the ground, rejuvenating the earth after the long winter months.

Furthermore, during a total lunar eclipse, the moon may exhibit an intense red color, leading to its nickname, ‘blood moon.’
