A Russian spy ship named Yantar is operating off the northern coast of Scotland. During Defense Secretary John Healey’s speech at No. 9 Downing Street in London, an image of the vessel appeared on a screen. The ship is known for its intelligence-gathering missions and mapping underwater cables. Healey indicated that Britain’s military is prepared to respond if the Yantar poses a threat, especially after it shone lasers at British pilots monitoring it. Directing lasers at RAF pilots is considered highly dangerous, and Britain is ready to take action based on the vessel’s next move.
Healey emphasized, “We have military options ready should the Yantar change course.” In response, the Russian embassy in London dismissed the UK’s accusations, stating that Russia’s actions do not threaten British interests or security. They also expressed disinterest in British underwater communications and urged the UK to stop actions that worsen the ongoing crisis in Europe.
The Yantar remains near British waters, positioned north of Scotland. Healey noted that this is the first time such laser-directed activity from Yantar has targeted the RAF, and he has adjusted naval engagement rules to improve monitoring of the vessel when it operates within the UK’s wider maritime zone.
