Two U.S. service members taking part in the African Lion joint military exercises have gone missing near Tan Tan in southern Morocco, according to statements from U.S. Africa Command (Africom) and the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces issued on Sunday.
Coordination between U.S., Moroccan, and allied forces has led to an extensive search and rescue effort utilizing ground troops, aircraft, and ships to locate the missing personnel. The service members were last seen near Cap Draa, with Moroccan officials indicating they disappeared close to a cliff.
A U.S. defense official told Reuters that initial assessments suggest the soldiers may have fallen into the ocean, emphasizing that the incident has no ties to terrorism.
African Lion stands as the largest annual joint military training conducted by Africom. Its goal is to bolster cooperation and interoperability among U.S. forces, NATO allies, and African partner nations. This year’s exercises are happening from April 27 through May 8 across four countries: Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia. The primary activities are concentrated in Morocco, involving about 5,000 troops from more than 40 nations.
