In Spain, you’ll have to keep your eyeballs to yourself for now if you want to get that new cryptocurrency called Worldcoin. The country’s government has put a short-term ban on the project because of concerns over how it’s handling people’s personal eye data.

Here’s the deal: Worldcoin is a crypto venture started by the big boss at OpenAI, Sam Altman. To get your hands on some Worldcoin crypto, you have to let the company scan your eyeballs using a special camera gizmo. That eye scan then creates a unique digital ID for you.

Sounds futuristic, right? Well, the Spanish data privacy folks aren’t so sure it’s a good idea. They say Worldcoin hasn’t been properly explaining the whole eye-scanning process to people. There were also complaints that minors were getting their peepers scanned without proper consent and that some folks couldn’t easily remove their data after the fact.

So for now, Worldcoin’s team in Spain has been ordered to stop collecting any new eye scans. They also can’t use the eye data they’ve already gathered until this whole mess gets sorted out, which could take up to three months.

The Spanish government is saying that unique biometric data like eye scans is super sensitive information that needs to be properly protected from any shady sharing or misuse.

Of course, Worldcoin is fighting back, claiming the Spanish authorities are twisting the facts and violating European laws in the process. They insist their system is the most privacy-friendly way to prove you’re a real human in our AI-filled world.

But Spain isn’t alone in scrutinizing Worldcoin’s methods. Other countries like France, Germany, and Kenya have also been keeping a close eye on the project’s practices.

Long story short, Worldcoin’s crypto-for-eyeballs concept is facing major hurdles in its mission to go global. Getting folks to freely hand over sensitive biometric data was always going to raise major privacy questions. Spain’s move shows just how big of a challenge that is shaping up to be.
