Sony continues to lead the charge in virtual reality gaming with its acclaimed PlayStation VR2. The company is now introducing a high-end XR headset equipped with specs that stand shoulder to shoulder with the Apple Vision Pro. However, it’s important to note that this new device, the Sony SRH-S1, is not the Sony XYN headset based on Google’s latest Android XR—nor is it designed to connect with a PlayStation 5. Rather, this headset is specifically targeted towards enterprise users involved in product design, and it comes with a hefty price tag exceeding that of the already luxurious Vision Pro.

With a price of $4,750, the Sony SRH-S1 boasts a robust system that incorporates both hardware and software into its design. It features a flip-up visor and specialized controllers designed for the detailed manipulation of virtual 3D objects. The ability to lift the visor facilitates direct interactions, while its halo strap design alleviates any pressure on the face. A finger-mounted ring enables users to grasp and manipulate items, and a 3D stylus reminiscent of something out of a science fiction film allows for meticulous adjustments.

The technical specifications of the SRH-S1 are impressive and comparable to those of the Vision Pro. It includes 4K-per-eye microOLED displays and full-color passthrough, allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings without needing to remove the headset. In addition, it supports head, hand, and eye tracking for seamless interaction. The device can function independently or be connected to a computer for enhanced performance, making it a top contender among VR headsets in terms of display resolution and sensor precision.

Although several competitors to the Apple Vision Pro are set to launch soon, the existence of the Sony SRH-S1 has been known for some time. One of the key details that had yet to be revealed was its pricing and release date. The headset is slated for availability on January 23, 2025, through Siemens, which develops the integrated NX Immersive Designer CAD software. Shipping is anticipated to commence in February.

While the Sony SRH-S1 is predominantly intended for enterprise applications, 2025 promises to be an impactful year for XR headsets, capturing interest for purposes ranging from immersive gaming to enjoying large-screen cinematic experiences and enhancing productivity amid breathtaking scenery.
