If you’re delving into the caves of Terraria, you’re likely to encounter lava, especially in the Hell biome, where it’s everywhere. There are large lava lakes, molten spots around ashes and Hellstone, lava in ruined structures, and some enemies even spew lava upon their demise on specific difficulty levels.
Going in unprotected will lead to a quick and fiery demise, causing you to lose hard-earned currency and return to your spawn point, disrupting your adventure. While certain accessories provide some protection, they can be tedious to acquire and take up precious inventory space. Instead, opt for Obsidian Skin Potions to easily navigate through lava hazards.
How To Obtain Obsidian Skin Potions
You can acquire Obsidian Skin Potions in two ways: crafting them using either an Alchemy Table or Crafting Bench with a Glass Bottle or by finding them in specific types of crates and chests throughout the game.
How To Craft Obsidian Skin Potions
Crafting them yourself is a more reliable method, but it means you need to explore both the Desert and Hell regions at least once to gather enough Obsidian.

Where To Find Obsidian Skin Potions
These potions can only be discovered in Shadow Chests, which are one of the two primary chest types located within the Hell biome. To access these chests, you’ll need a Shadow Key, obtainable after defeating a Skeleton and unlocking at least one Dungeon Chest.
- Each Shadow Chest has about a 10% chance of containing one to three Obsidian Skin Potions.
Additionally, you might occasionally find Obsidian Skin Potions by breaking vases in Ruined Houses located in the Underworld biome.
Regarding crates, Obsidian Skin Potions can be found in any type of crate during both Pre-Hardmode and Hardmode. The only difference is the availability and the chance of acquiring these potions.
Using crates allows you to obtain the potions much sooner, as they can be fished up in any biome with any fishing rod. This provides some Obsidian Skin Potions before reaching Hell and gathering Fireblossoms for crafting them yourself.
- Crates with a 1 in 70 chance of dropping the potion can yield between one and three Obsidian Skin Potions.
- Crates with a 1 in 15 chance of containing the potion can drop between two and five Obsidian Skin Potions.
- All other crates may drop between two and four Obsidian Skin Potions.
Using Fishing Rods with higher Fishing Power, along with buffing potions and items like the Fishing Potion, Crate Potion, and Angler Earring can improve your odds of catching a crate.
