Baqalas and grocery stores in Saudi Arabia can no longer sell tobacco, dates, meat, or fresh produce. Minister Majed Al-Hogail from the Municipalities and Housing department made this new law.
The rule takes effect right away and cannot be changed. Existing stores have a maximum of 6 months to follow the new requirements. Small shops, grocery stores, and kiosks must stop selling meat, dates, fresh produce, and tobacco items including cigarettes, vapes, and water pipes.
Supply stores can sell these products, though meat sales need a separate license. Large hypermarkets are allowed to sell everything according to the updated regulations.
Because of the updates, supermarkets, hypermarkets, and grocery stores can now sell charging cables and prepaid recharge cards.
Under the updated regulations, supermarkets must be at least 100 square meters in size, hypermarkets need 500 square meters, and grocery stores or Baqalas require 24 square meters of floor area.
