Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led a review session Monday focused on the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. Highlights showed that domestic internet connections increased from 1.9 million in 2024 to 5.10 million this year, while IT exports are forecasted to reach $4.6 billion in the current fiscal year.
The government’s priorities include fostering growth in the IT sector and expanding exports related to technology. PM Sharif stressed that Pakistan’s youth have significant potential in the IT industry, which should be fully harnessed.
He directed the rapid deployment of Asaan Khidmat Centers in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, also encouraging collaboration with provincial governments to launch these facilities nationwide. The aim is to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural regions by engaging local and district governments.
During the briefing, it was shared that Pakistan held its largest 5G auction since 2016, generating $509 million in revenue. Additionally, in February 2025, the “Indus AI Week” event took place across 30 cities, drawing over 100 international delegates and showcasing 88 exhibitor pavilions to promote artificial intelligence.
Connectivity initiatives have extended fiber optic services to government schools and health units in Islamabad, with free internet hotspots near completion in the capital. E-learning pods are also being installed in Saidpur Model Village and Fatima Jinnah Park to enhance digital education access.
The meeting was attended by several federal ministers, the Minister of State for Finance and Railways, Bilal Azhar Kayani, and other senior officials.
