In recent times, major tech companies like Samsung and Google have significantly extended their support for software updates on Android devices. This trend, however, has not been mirrored by Motorola—until now.

As reported by Android Authority, Motorola’s newest smartphone, the Motorola Edge 50 Neo, is set to offer users five years of operating system updates and security patches. Although this falls short of the seven-year commitment made by competitors like Samsung and Google, it marks a notable enhancement compared to Motorola’s previous offerings.

This news is particularly encouraging for prospective buyers of Motorola phones, although it is somewhat unexpected. Traditionally, Motorola’s flagship models, such as the Motorola Edge 2024 and Motorola Razr Plus 2024, provide three years of Android OS updates coupled with four years of security updates. In contrast, the Edge 50 Neo is marketed as a mid-range device.

Featuring a 6.4-inch screen, the Edge 50 Neo is set to launch in India on September 16 after making its debut in Europe. The smartphone operates on a Dimensity 7300 processor and offers configurations with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM and storage options of 256GB or 512GB. Additional specifications include an LTPO OLED display, a 4,310mAh battery, 68W wired charging, and 15W wireless charging capabilities. Camera-wise, it sports a 50MP primary sensor, a 13MP ultrawide camera, a 10MP 3x telephoto lens, and a 32MP front camera.

Motorola’s choice to extend software support for the Edge 50 Neo is a positive move, and there is hope that this trend will extend to other models in their lineup. While the three years of Android updates represent a significant step forward, they still do not match the seven-year support provided by Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series or Google’s Pixel 9 series. It’s important to note, however, that devices from Samsung and Google are generally priced higher than those from Motorola.

The Motorola Edge 50 Neo is priced at €499, which is approximately $551 in Europe. Pricing details for the Indian market are yet to be disclosed.
