The director of Miss Universe Thailand, Nawat Itsaragrisil, issued an apology on stage Wednesday after a video of him criticizing contestants—along with insulting Miss Mexico—went viral, causing several delegates to leave in protest.
“If anyone was upset or uncomfortable with what happened, I sincerely apologize,” Nawat said. He added, “Please understand that the pressure is intense. I am human, and sometimes I can’t control my reactions. My intention was never to hurt anyone because I have respect for all of you.”
He continued, “I want to take this moment to apologize to the delegates. I also apologize to Miss Universe and to people around the world. I hope the message conveyed is the right one. Please verify all information on our website.”
The controversy arose during a pre-pageant event when Nawat publicly reprimanded Mexico’s Fatima Bosch in front of dozens of contestants for not posting promotional content. When she voiced her objection, he summoned security and threatened to disqualify supporters, prompting Bosch to leave the stage, joined by others standing in solidarity.
Among those who left was the reigning Miss Universe, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig of Denmark. Despite the tensions, the event continued with contestants attending a welcome gathering in Bangkok on Wednesday. The next Miss Universe will be crowned on November 21.
