In the words of Keanu Reeves from John Wick, “I’m thinking I’m back.”
At CinemaCon, Lionsgate unveiled three exciting additions to the John Wick franchise: John Wick 5, an animated prequel, and a standalone film featuring Donnie Yen as Caine.
The standout announcement is John Wick: Chapter 5, with Reeves reprising his iconic role and Chad Stahelski returning to direct. Stahelski will produce the film alongside producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road.
The latest installment, John Wick: Chapter 4, became the franchise’s highest-grossing film, amassing over $440 million globally. At the conclusion of Chapter 4, John succumbs to injuries from the duel at Sacré-Cœur, and Winston (Ian McShane) alongside the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) pay their respects at his grave, placed next to that of his wife, Helen.
“Keanu, Chad, Basil, and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” stated Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson regarding John Wick: Chapter 5. “We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next.”
Donnie Yen will also reprise his role as Caine in a separate film, which he will direct. Dubbed as a Hong Kong-style action thriller, the screenplay for the Caine film will be penned by Mattson Tomlin, with Robert Askins having written the initial draft. Stahelski, Iwanyk, and Lee will join as producers.

Caine, a skilled blind assassin and a former ally of Wick, made his debut in John Wick: Chapter 4. The upcoming film will continue the story after Chapter 4, featuring Caine as he steps away from his life with the High Table. Production is set to begin in Hong Kong later this year.
Furthermore, Reeves will lend his voice to the lead character in an animated John Wick movie. Shannon Tindle will direct the film, with a screenplay written by Vanessa Taylor, who is known for her Academy Award-nominated work on The Shape of Water alongside Guillermo del Toro, while Tindle co-directed Netflix’s Ultraman: Rising.
This animated feature will serve as a prequel, exploring the events leading up to the night when John accomplished the Impossible Task, the mission that liberated him from the High Table and set the stage for his life with Helen.
Producers for the animated prequel will include Reeves, Stahelski, Iwanyk, and Lee.
