“We’re on the verge of selecting the most recognized individual in the world,” proclaims Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in the gripping new trailer for Conclave, Edward Berger’s psychological thriller brought to you by Focus Features.
Following the unexpected death of the Pope, Lawrence faces the monumental task of organizing the conclave — the gathering of cardinals whose duty is to select a new pope. These cardinals assemble at the Vatican to determine the future leader of the Catholic Church. However, Lawrence uncovers a disturbing secret about the late pope that could influence several candidates for succession. “These secrets have the potential to shake the very core of the Church,” warns the official synopsis.
When Lawrence asserts that the conclave is not a battlefield, Cardinal Bellini, played by Stanley Tucci, passionately retorts, “It is a war, and you must choose your allegiance.”
The cast of Conclave also features John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco, and Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes.
Berger’s eagerly awaited new film, Conclave, follows his acclaimed work on All Quiet on the Western Front, which earned four Oscars, including Best International Feature and Best Cinematography. This latest film is based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel of the same name, with the screenplay crafted by Oscar-nominated writer Peter Straughan.
Conclave had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, receiving an enthusiastic response. This papal drama is already in the mix for the 2025 Oscars, with Ralph Fiennes, a two-time Oscar nominee, seen as a frontrunner for Best Actor according to predictions. The film is also expected to vie for accolades such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Tucci), Best Supporting Actress (Rossellini), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Mark your calendars for Conclave, which will hit theaters on October 25, 2024.
