Indonesia has temporarily banned Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot due to concerns over AI-produced pornographic content, making it the first nation to block access to the platform. The action follows global criticism and investigations into sexualized material on the app, spanning from Europe to Asia.
Grok’s parent startup, xAI, announced on Thursday that it would limit image creation and editing features to paid subscribers while addressing security flaws that led to explicit outputs, including images involving minors dressed provocatively.
The Digital and Communications Minister, Meutya Hafid, emphasized that non-consensual deepfake sexual content is a grave infringement on human rights, dignity, and public safety online. The government has also summoned xAI representatives for discussions regarding the issue.
Musk clarified on X that users creating illegal material with Grok would face the same penalties as those who upload illicit content. When contacted for feedback, xAI responded with what appeared to be an automated message, “Legacy Media Lies.” The company has yet to provide further comment.
As the country with the largest Muslim population, Indonesia enforces strict regulations banning the online sharing of obscene material.
