While playing Heartopia, you can spend your time on different hobbies to improve your skills, earn money, and enjoy the game more. However, you won’t have access to all hobbies immediately. To unlock each one, you’ll first need to increase your rank in the Developer’s Guild.
The Developer’s Guild, or DG, is available almost immediately when you start Heartopia. As you level up in the guild, you unlock new features and activities, including hobbies. At the beginning, you won’t be able to choose which hobbies to unlock, but later, you’ll have options to select from.
How to Unlock and Upgrade Hobbies
You unlock hobbies in Heartopia through the DG. When you level up, you often receive a Hobby Expansion Ticket as a reward. You then give this ticket to a Hobby Mentor in exchange for learning their hobby. At first, the ticket must be given to a specific mentor, but after the first couple, you’ll be able to choose from three different mentors.
Eventually, you will unlock all hobbies in the game. The order in which you unlock them depends on the choices you make when given options, but it doesn’t prevent you from learning the other hobbies later. When offered a Hobby Selection Ticket, you can choose any available hobby. While early choices might be more beneficial—for example, learning cooking first, as it’s profitable—any hobby can be learned at its own pace later on.
You can check your current level and what’s needed for the next hobby unlock by opening the Watch and selecting the DG Member’s Guild. Your Contribution Medals at the bottom show how close you are to the next level. Keep in mind, you can only earn a limited number of medals each day through requests, which slows down speeding up levels.
How to Unlock Each Hobby
There are currently seven hobbies in Heartopia:
- Fishing
- Gardening
- Cooking
- Insect Catching
- Birdwatching
- Cat Caring
- Dog Caring
The method to unlock each hobby is listed below:
| Hobby | Description | How to Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Fishing | Fish in any water body for cooking, keeping, or selling fish. | Reach DG Level 2 and give a Hobby Expansion Ticket to Vanya. |
| Gardening | Grow your own crops for food or sale. | Reach DG Level 3 and give to Blanc. |
| Cooking | Use stoves to cook dishes from fishing and gardening ingredients. | Reach DG Level 5, 8, or 11, and give to Massimo. |
| Insect Catching | Capture insects with a bubble wand for sale or collection. | Reach DG Level 5, 8, or 11, and give to Naniwa. |
| Birdwatching | Photograph and track various birds in Heartopia. | Reach DG Level 5, 8, or 11, and give to Bailey J. |
| Cat Caring | Adopt and care for a kitten. | Reach DG Level 12 and give to Mrs. Joan. |
| Dog Caring | Adopt and care for a puppy. | Reach DG Level 12 after starting Cat Caring, and give to Mrs. Joan. |
While unlocking different hobbies, the main benefit of upgrading them is improved quality or star ratings of products, and some upgrades can make tasks easier. For example, upgraded Gardening can reduce the time needed to grow high-quality crops.
How to Upgrade Hobbies
To upgrade a hobby, you need to participate in it to fill a meter at the bottom of the hobby’s page. Each hobby level has its own meter requirement, which you fill by engaging in that activity. You also need Hobby Upgrade Tickets for each upgrade, which are earned through the DG or Collection Point Rewards.
Once you meet both the meter requirement and have enough tickets, you can tap the upgrade option. When viewing your hobbies, a notification will appear above hobbies that are ready to be upgraded. Feel free to upgrade them in any order, but it’s generally best to focus on the ones that give you the most value early on. For example, upgrading Fishing, Gardening, and Cooking can be particularly beneficial since they are the most actively used.
Which Hobbies to Unlock and Upgrade First
You need to unlock some hobbies in a specific sequence, but you can choose the order for three of them once you reach DG Level 5. You’ll get a Hobby Expansion Ticket, and then choose whether to unlock Cooking, Insect Catching, or Birdwatching.
You can unlock one of these at Level 5, another at Level 8, and the last at Level 11. Later, at Level 12, you’ll unlock Cat Caring and Dog Caring, with Cat Caring needing to be unlocked before Dog Caring. The recommended order is:
- Fishing (must unlock first)
- Gardening (must unlock second)
- Cooking
- Insect Catching
- Birdwatching
- Cat Caring (must unlock before Dog Caring)
- Dog Caring
Since you automatically get Fishing and Gardening, next is best to unlock Cooking because its ingredients (fish and crops) are useful for preparing meals. While unlocking Insect Catching or Birdwatching first is fine, cooking synergizes well with early mandatory hobbies.
For upgrading hobbies, prioritize those most useful to you—mainly Fishing, Gardening, and Cooking—as they’ll be central to your gameplay. Afterwards, the order becomes less critical. If you own a pet, upgrading the respective hobby for your cat or dog can be a good idea, but overall, focus on upgrading the hobbies you use the most first.
