Everyone, including Google, is jumping on the ChatGPT bandwagon. But you can’t yet enjoy Google’s new toy.

Google has announced Bard, its response to ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing generative AI search model, earlier this week. You ask it a question, and it responds with a detailed, apparently well-researched response. That is, in concept, how it works.

2/ Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world's knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Today we're opening Bard up to trusted external testers. pic.twitter.com/QPy5BcERd6

Regretfully, most people can’t find out how effectively Bard actually does work right now. According to a company blog post, Google has only given it to “trusted testers” but will make it more widely available “in the coming weeks.”

So, if you want to dive headfirst into Bard and try to have it say bizarre things for social media likes, that’s a downer. That said, it’s not the end of the universe for those interested in artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, here’s how to use Microsoft’s Bing AI chatbot. Microsoft has you covered if you want to experiment with another AI bot. In one way.

Microsoft’s Bing search engine will also get a generative AI bot to answer questions like “write a rhyming poem” or “start creating a three-course menu.” Sadly, it is not yet fully accessible to the general public. However, there is still a way for you to get your foot in the door.
