Guangzhou has introduced a range of new policies aimed at boosting and supporting services for foreign individuals traveling to the southern Chinese city for medical care, health services, and rehabilitation treatments.
One of the key initiatives is the establishment of the International Medical Tourism Service Center. This center will assist foreign patients with visa procedures, offer remote pre-arrival consultations, and provide translation, accommodation, and meal arrangements during their stay. Additionally, it will coordinate post-treatment rehabilitation and remote follow-up services after patients leave the city.
Other policy measures focus on supporting 17 pilot international medical institutions in Guangzhou to develop global medical teams, establishing a comprehensive, high-quality foreign-oriented service system, and encouraging foreign-owned hospitals to bring in renowned international medical brands to enhance service offerings.
The center aims to leverage Guangzhou’s top-tier medical resources, vibrant cultural tourism scene, and cross-border insurance options to develop an integrated platform combining healthcare, rehabilitation, and tourism experiences.
Further policies promote multi-site practice rights for medical professionals from abroad, as well as Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and seek recognition of overseas medical qualifications to attract leading medical talent to local institutions.
Data shared during the event revealed that the number of foreign patients seeking treatment in Guangzhou increased by over 20% last year compared to the previous year. International medical tourism is emerging as a new growth driver for the city’s service industry.
