Google is introducing an important new capability to Gemini that addresses a significant challenge users experience while interacting with its AI chatbot. The innovative memory feature enables Gemini to recall details from previous conversations.
According to a Google update, “Whether you’re inquiring about something you’ve discussed before or requesting a summary of an earlier exchange, Gemini now utilizes information from relevant chats to respond effectively.”
Previously, users had to wade through their chat history to find details from past interactions with Gemini. While scrolling through conversations, they could then pose additional questions specific to that context. This back-and-forth process was not only tedious but also inconvenient, especially when trying to remember information from a distant chat. A notable shortcoming of Gemini’s chat history is the absence of a search function, which exacerbated the difficulty of locating forgotten discussions.
In essence, this meant users had to sift through their messages manually, unlike simply looking up tabs in a web browser. Additionally, users might find it frustrating when their chats are scattered across various versions of Gemini. For those utilizing Gemini for personal matters, such as emotional support or guidance, the lack of memory could significantly diminish their experience.
A strong memory feature has been among the most requested enhancements in online discussions about chatbots meant for companionship and assistance. For instance, applications like Nomi exemplify the high demand for chatbots capable of remembering previous interactions.
To facilitate easier access, Google has also added the option to pin important conversations. This latest update is a promising advancement, though users should note that they must enable Gemini App Activity for the memory function to operate.
Currently, the new memory feature in Gemini supports only English and is available to users with a Google One AI Premium subscription. It can be accessed via both web and mobile platforms. Subscribers can also explore the just-released experimental models of Gemini 2.0. Google has indicated that support for additional languages will follow soon, along with an expansion to Enterprise and Workspace Business customers in the upcoming weeks.
