A teenage boy from France faces charges of vandalism and causing a public disturbance in Singapore, related to an incident involving a straw and a vending machine. Court documents reveal that Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, 18, recorded himself licking a straw and then returning it to a dispenser of orange juice at a vending machine. He uploaded this video to Instagram, aware that it could likely disturb or upset the public.
Court records state that Maximilien is currently enrolled as a student in Singapore. The offense of public nuisance could result in a maximum sentence of three months in jail along with a fine. Additionally, he faces a second charge of mischief because he was aware that his actions could cause financial loss or damage to iJooz, the company responsible for the vending machine, which had to replace all 500 straws in its dispenser. The mischief charge could lead to up to two years in prison and a fine if convicted.
These alleged actions took place on March 12, and the charges were filed in a district court last Friday. The next court session is scheduled for May 22. The Straits Times reported that the video quickly spread across the internet, causing shock and concern among viewers.
