Four individuals lost their lives, with an additional 20 people injured, when a middle school student opened fire at a school in southeastern Turkey’s Kahramanmaras province on Wednesday, according to Governor Mukerrem Unluer. The victims included a teacher and three students. The shooter, who used his father’s weapons hidden in a backpack, also died during the incident. Authorities have launched an immediate investigation into the shooting, and heightened security measures are now in place around the school.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing intense gunfire, with footage showing a person being rushed into an ambulance, their face and body covered, and tearful parents gathering outside the school in Kahramanmaras’s main city. Police have responded by increasing security around the area, with ambulances present on scene.
In a related incident the day prior, a former student opened fire at his previous high school, wounding 16 individuals—including students—before taking his own life in a confrontation with police. School shootings are infrequent in Turkey. However, in May 2024, a former student fatally shot a private high school principal in Istanbul five months after being expelled.
