Five individuals lost their lives, and numerous others sustained injuries when a car bomb targeted a military installation along a busy street in Cali, Colombia, on Thursday, officials confirmed. Authorities identified the attack as aimed at the Marco Fidel Suarez Military Aviation School.
A 65-year-old witness, Hector Fabio Bolanos, described the scene to AFP: “There was a loud explosion near the airbase.” He added, “Many people were injured, and several homes in front of the base were damaged.” Multiple buildings and a school were evacuated as a safety measure.
Cali’s mayor, Alejandro Eder, reported preliminary figures indicating at least five fatalities and 36 injuries. In response, he implemented a ban on large trucks entering the city to prevent further explosions. Witness Alexis Atizabal, aged 40, expressed concern that civilians might be among the casualties, noting, “Some of the victims were walking on the avenue.”
Responsibility for the attack has not been officially claimed, but regional governor Dilian Francisca Toro condemned it as an act of terrorism, stating, “Terrorism will not defeat us.” Earlier in June, leftist guerrilla groups admitted to carrying out a series of bombings and gun attacks around Cali that resulted in seven deaths. The group, known as the Central General Staff (EMC), dismissed the 2016 peace agreement and has increased its activities ahead of the 2026 elections.
