Indian authorities are investigating a fatal car explosion in Delhi using the country’s primary anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, according to reports on Tuesday. The law targets acts related to terrorism and threats to national sovereignty and integrity, allowing for investigation and prosecution of such activities. These reports, based on police records and media sources, have not been independently verified by Reuters.
The blast occurred near the historic Red Fort on Monday evening, resulting in at least eight deaths and 20 injuries. It was a rare incident in the heavily fortified city of over 30 million residents, prompting heightened alerts across several states and critical infrastructures.
Delhi’s Federal Home Minister Amit Shah stated that authorities are examining all possible angles and expect to reach conclusions soon. The police described the incident as involving a slow-moving vehicle that halted at a traffic light before exploding shortly before 7 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. GMT). Vehicles in the vicinity were also significantly damaged.
The scene of the explosion was strewn with wreckage, mangled bodies, and damaged cars on a busy street close to a metro station in Delhi’s old quarter. The Red Fort, a 17th-century Mughal-era monument blending Persian and Indian architectural styles, is a prominent tourist attraction and a traditional venue for the Prime Minister’s annual Independence Day address on August 15.
