Several individuals lost their lives, and others sustained injuries when a blast occurred inside a bar in the upscale Alpine ski town of Crans Montana, Swiss authorities announced early Thursday.
“An explosion of unknown origin occurred,” Gaetan Lathion, a police spokesperson for Wallis canton in southwestern Switzerland, told AFP.
He confirmed that there were multiple fatalities and several injured.
The blast happened around 1:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) at Le Constellation, a bar favored by tourists, as guests celebrated the New Year.
Images from Swiss outlets showed a building engulfed in flames with emergency crews nearby.
“The response is still ongoing,” Lathion added.
