Britain’s BBC issued an apology to Donald Trump Thursday for editing a speech to suggest he endorsed violence, aiming to prevent possible legal action from the U.S. president. The broadcaster dismissed the validity of the defamation claim.
In a statement, BBC Chairman Samir Shah personally wrote to the White House, expressing regret over the altered clip and clarified that the BBC does not intend to rebroadcast the documentary on any platform. The BBC emphasized its disagreement with the basis of the claim, despite regrets over the editing.
The leak of internal allegations of bias at the BBC—particularly related to how it edited a 2021 Trump speech during the Capitol riot—has led to the resignation of its top two executives and prompted Trump to threaten a billion-dollar lawsuit.
This situation threatens to force the BBC to use viewer funds to settle damages, potentially fueling criticism amid increasing license fee cancellations. Lawyers representing Trump demanded that the BBC withdraw the program, issue an apology, and offer appropriate compensation, or face a lawsuit seeking at least $1 billion in damages.
