Australia announced that a woman will serve as commander of its army for the first time in its history, marking a significant milestone in the country’s military leadership transition. Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, currently holding the role of chief of joint capabilities, is slated to assume the position of Army Chief come July, succeeding Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, according to an official government statement.
Coyle’s elevation aligns with Australia’s broader efforts to increase female representation within the military. The nation is grappling with numerous allegations of widespread sexual harassment and discrimination, prompting initiatives to foster a more inclusive environment.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the historic nature of this change, stating, “Starting in July, we will witness the first-ever female Army Chief in Australia’s 125-year military history.” Defense Minister Richard Marles described Coyle’s appointment as a profound and historic achievement, emphasizing the importance of visibility, saying, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” He expressed confidence that Coyle’s role would inspire both current female service members and future recruits.
Enlisting in the military in 1987 at age 55, Coyle has held various senior command positions and will become the first woman to lead any branch of Australia’s armed forces, Marles noted. Currently, women represent about 21% of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and make up approximately 18.5% of senior leadership roles, with a goal of reaching 25% gender participation by 2030.
Last October, a class-action lawsuit was filed against the ADF, alleging the military failed to adequately protect thousands of female officers from systemic sexual assault, harassment, and discrimination.
Additionally, the government announced a leadership change at the top of the ADF, with Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, the current head of the Royal Australian Navy, appointed as the new Chief of Defense Force, succeeding Admiral David Johnston. Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley, the deputy chief of navy, will take over as head of the Navy.
