Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Shot During Campaign Event
On June 7, 2025, Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe was shot in Bogotá while attending a campaign event, according to reports from both the government and his party. Local media have indicated that he is currently hospitalized in serious condition.
The 39-year-old senator is affiliated with the opposition Democratic Center party, which was established by former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe. It’s important to note that there is no familial relationship between the senator and the former president.
The senator was engaged in a public campaign gathering in the Fontibón neighborhood when "armed individuals shot him in the back," as described in a statement from his party condemning the violent attack. While the party did acknowledge the seriousness of the situation, they did not provide any additional information regarding Uribe’s condition.
Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez reported that a suspect has been apprehended in connection with the shooting, and authorities are looking into the possibility of additional accomplices. Sanchez mentioned that he visited the hospital where Uribe is receiving care.
In a statement, the presidency of Colombia condemned the violent act, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Senator Uribe comes from a well-known family in Colombia, with historical ties to the Liberal Party. His father was an influential businessman and union leader, while his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was kidnapped in 1990 by a militant group led by the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar. Tragically, she lost her life during a rescue attempt.
Colombia has been grappling with a long-standing conflict involving leftist rebels, criminal organizations stemming from right-wing militias, and government forces. President Gustavo Petro expressed his condolences to the senator’s family in a message on social media, stating, "I don’t know how to ease your pain. It embodies the sorrow of a lost mother and that of a nation."
