Modi’s Absence at Upcoming G7 Summit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada due to strained relations between New Delhi and Ottawa, according to reports from Indian media citing insider sources.
Sources have indicated that neither Indian officials have confirmed Modi’s visit nor has Canada made an approach to discuss it. They noted that the bilateral relationship needs improvement before any significant visits can take place.
This year marks the first time in six years that Modi will miss the G7 summit, which is slated to occur in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17.
If Modi were to visit Canada, security concerns would also be a critical issue to address, sources have added. Diplomatic ties between India and Canada have been strained for the past two years, particularly following the assassination of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
In a related incident last year, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the top envoy, due to allegations of involvement in activities against Sikh separatists within Canada.
While there is uncertainty surrounding Modi’s participation, reports suggest that leaders from South Africa, Ukraine, and Australia have already accepted invitations to the summit. The G7 includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, alongside the European Commission president and representatives from other nations who are expected to attend.
