On Monday, the Indian Supreme Court scrutinized Madhya Pradesh BJP minister Kunwar Vijay Shah’s apology regarding his comments about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, suggesting it might be nothing more than “crocodile tears” intended to evade legal consequences.
Colonel Qureshi, along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, was among the two officers who provided the media with a briefing on the military strategies involved in Operation Sindoor, as reported by Indian news sources.
The court, represented by Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, stated that they did not require the minister’s apology. “Your offensive remarks were made without any consideration… This apology is unnecessary,” the bench remarked, implying that it appeared to be an insincere attempt to sidestep legal accountability.
The court admonished the minister for his public conduct, emphasizing the importance of choosing his words carefully as a representative of the public.
“We have seen your videos; you were on the edge of using demeaning language,” the bench noted during the proceedings.
Furthermore, the Madhya Pradesh state police was instructed to form a special investigation team (SIT) to further examine the situation.
In a viral video clip from a public address, Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah had referred to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi as “the sister of terrorists.” He stated, “We sent a sister of their own to teach a lesson to those who widowed our daughters,” alluding to Colonel Qureshi in the aftermath of India’s Operation Sindoor.
It is essential to realize that Operation Sindoor was executed by India against Pakistan following claims that Pakistan was involved in attacks in Pahalgam, a point that has yet to be substantiated. In response, Pakistan initiated Operation Bunyan um Marsoos against India after the latter’s actions.
