Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a unilateral ceasefire for Easter in Ukraine, instructing his military to halt all operations at 6 p.m. Moscow time (1500 GMT) on Saturday, lasting until the end of Sunday.
“We expect Ukraine to mirror our actions. However, our forces must be ready to counter any potential violations of the ceasefire and provocations from the adversary, as well as any aggressive actions,” he added.
Putin claimed that Gerasimov informed him that Ukraine has “repeatedly violated an agreement prohibiting attacks on energy infrastructure over 100 times.”
On Friday, Russia lifted a previous restriction on targeting Ukrainian energy facilities after both sides accused each other of breaking an unofficial agreement.
The recent ceasefire proposal aims to demonstrate “the sincerity of the Kyiv regime’s willingness, as well as its ability, to abide by agreements and engage in constructive dialogue for peace,” Putin remarked.
Earlier efforts to establish ceasefires during Easter in April 2022 and Orthodox Christmas in January 2023 fell through, as both parties failed to reach a consensus.
