The newest trend that’s making waves? People refusing to shut their laptops while walking through airports or heading to meetings—fearing that their AI assistants will shut down. The truth is, Windows has options to prevent that.
Here’s what’s happening: tech enthusiasts are traversing the world with their laptops open, their AI agents working away in the background, almost like pizzas carried like trophies. When the lid is closed, the device defaults to sleep or hibernate modes, which halts all active processes, including those crucial AI tasks. Result? Work abruptly ends.
While these default settings might cause issues, there’s an easy fix. Windows can be set to keep your laptop operational even when you shut the lid.
To do this, go to Settings > System > Power & Battery. Scroll to the “On Battery Power” section, click “Additional Power Settings,” then select “Choose what closing the lid does.” Under “When I close the lid,” pick “Do nothing.” Now, your laptop continues running regardless of the lid’s position.
Don’t forget: check your “Screen, sleep, and hibernate” timeouts as well. Under the same Power & Battery menu, set “Make my device sleep after” to “Never” for both “Plugged in” and “On battery.” This ensures your AI sessions won’t be interrupted due to inactivity. While turning the display off when closing the lid is usually harmless, putting the device into sleep mode can halt processes — particularly important for background tasks and local AI work.
Another aspect worth noting is proximity sensing. Some laptops attempt to detect if you’re nearby and might lock or suspend themselves when they think you’ve gone out of range. Disabling this feature can prevent unexpected sleep events.
Once these settings are adjusted, your laptop should stay active and processing in the background, no matter what. However, remember that keeping your device slightly open allows for better cooling since fans can circulate air freely. When inside a bag, airflow is restricted, leading to heat buildup. Overheating triggers thermal sensors to throttle performance or force an emergency shutdown to avoid damage—particularly problematic for models with dedicated GPUs, which generate more heat. Many Surface devices have faced this issue, illustrating why keeping your laptop in the open is a smart move.
So, while carrying your laptop out in the open might seem inconvenient, it’s better for the device’s health. The trend of showing off open, active laptops with AI work is fine, but perhaps it’s time to reconsider how we carry and care for our devices.
