For the first time in the Monster Hunter series, you have the option to carry two weapons during a hunt. This feature allows players to experiment with both a primary and a secondary weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Choosing the right weapons can be a challenge, especially since you have the option of a secondary weapon. You'll unlock access to a secondary weapon after completing the Village of the Whispering Winds quest, which is the second main story mission. At this point, you can learn to switch between your weapons.
How to switch to your secondary weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds
Here's how to make the transition between your primary and secondary weapons.
Step 1: To mount your Seikret, press up on your d-pad for controllers or Tab on a PC. If your Seikret isn't nearby, calling it will prompt it to come to you.
Step 2: You can swap weapons only when mounted on your Seikret. To switch to your secondary weapon, press right on the d-pad or the X key on PC. If you're not mounted, the button press will call your Seikret and swap weapons simultaneously.

Step 3: You can now dismount your Seikret to utilize your secondary weapon. Unlike what you might think, the secondary weapon can be used while not mounted. If you want to switch back to your primary weapon, just repeat step two.
How to change your secondary weapon
If you'd like to pick different weapons for your primary and secondary slots, follow these simple steps.
Step 1: Go to your tent, either at the base camp or a temporary camp in the wild. This will bring up a screen with you and your Palico seated, along with several menu options.

Step 2: Navigate to the second tab and select the Change Equipment option.

Step 3: Select your secondary weapon slot to change which weapon you'd like to equip.

Optimal combinations of secondary and primary weapons
While opting for a secondary weapon isn't mandatory, it can significantly enhance your combat options and work synergistically with your main weapon. Here are some effective combinations to consider on your hunting expeditions:
- Any weapons + Light/Heavy Bowgun: A combination of a melee primary weapon with a Light or Heavy Bowgun offers a well-rounded approach to both close and ranged combat. The Light Bowgun allows for a quicker fire rate, while the Heavy Bowgun delivers greater damage at a slower pace.
- Dual Blades + Bow: This combination provides a dynamic playstyle, allowing for rapid melee attacks combined with ranged capabilities. I find it particularly enjoyable to use the Bow while mounted on the Seikret, as it enhances mobility.
- Hunting Horn + Great Sword: A formidable duo that can dish out substantial damage despite their slower attack speeds. The Hunting Horn can offer various buffs to support your usage of the Great Sword.
- Insect Glaive + Dual Blades: For players who favor quick movements and rapid strikes, this pairing is ideal. The Dual Blades grant buffs for perfect dodges, while the Insect Glaive enhances vertical mobility, enabling you to evade danger more effectively.
