If you’re wondering whether you can use the same verified custom domain across different Email Communication Services (ECS) in separate Azure subscriptions, the answer is no. You can’t directly share the same verified domain resource between multiple ECS instances. Instead, you need to go through the process of adding and verifying the domain separately in each subscription.
Here’s what you should do:
First, in your new subscription, add your domain (like MyDomain.com) to the second ECS. During this process, Azure will give you a new, unique TXT record. You’ll need to add this TXT record to your DNS settings. Fortunately, you can keep both TXT records—one from your first account, and the new one—without any issues, since they coexist peacefully.
Next, your existing DNS records for SPF and DKIM will still be valid, so your email authentication settings can be reused. However, you’ll still need to complete the verification process in the new ECS to ensure Azure recognizes and approves the domain for that specific resource.
The best way to manage one custom domain across multiple ECS resources in different subscriptions is to add and verify the domain separately in each ECS. Once verified, you can connect the same domain to each ECS, and Azure allows linking up to 100 domains to a single communication resource. When connecting the domain, you can filter by subscription to keep everything organized.
There are some important limitations to keep in mind. Domain verification is scoped to each ECS, which means you can’t automatically share a verified domain across subscriptions. To avoid confusion, it’s often better to use subdomains for different environments or purposes, like prod.mydomain.com or marketing.mydomain.com. This way, each subdomain is managed separately and provides better separation.
If possible, consolidate your email sending into one ECS and add multiple sender addresses, such as [email protected] and [email protected]. After setting everything up, always check your email deliverability to ensure your messages reach their recipients. Also, try to align your resources’ geographic locations to improve performance and compliance.
