Processors for desktop computers come in two main packaging formats: elaborate boxed sets and simple cardboard boxes or plastic trays. The boxed versions typically include additional warranty coverage, whereas tray CPUs are sold as bulk items for mass purchasers such as retailers and PC builders.
Bulk tray CPUs are manufactured in large quantities, with each tray generally holding 21 units, designed to optimize space and storage efficiency. They are purchased in bulk at discounted rates by resellers and system manufacturers.
The primary benefit of opting for a boxed processor is the longer manufacturer’s warranty—usually three years from AMD or Intel. Conversely, tray processors typically carry a shorter warranty period, often just two years, which is provided by the retailer or PC builder rather than the manufacturer.
Typically, CPUs are engineered to last a minimum of ten years. As a result, the failure rate is quite low, with most issues arising from manufacturing defects, such as those observed in certain models from Intel’s 13th and 14th generations.
Many boxed CPUs include an integrated cooler, eliminating the need for consumers to purchase this component separately. Intel is notably generous in this regard, frequently shipping boxed models with coolers such as the Laminar RM2, RH1, or RM1, depending on the generation and model.
For example, current Intel Core Ultra 200 series variants like the 285, 265(F), 235, and 225(F) are paired with the Laminar RM2 cooler. Similarly, many 12th, 13th, and 14th generation Core i processors are supplied with the Laminar RH1 or RM1 coolers, which are available in multiple store configurations.
AMD
Additionally, AMD supplies some boxed processors with cooling solutions. Notably, the AMD Wraith Prism cooler is bundled with models such as the Ryzen 7900 and 7700, which can be valued at around $21 on retail sites like Amazon.
Other AMD models, such as the 8700G and 5700, come pre-packed with the Wraith Spire cooler. Several variants—including the 9600, 8700F, 8600G, 8500G, 8400F, 8300G, 7600, 5700G, 5600X, 5600GT, 5600G, and 5500GT—include the more basic Wraith Stealth cooling system.
Advantages of opting for a tray CPU
Tray processors usually cost a few dollars less than their boxed counterparts, but the price difference is often minimal. Therefore, the decision to buy tray or boxed models mainly depends on individual needs and preferences.
Tray CPUs tend to remain available longer on the market because they are less popular and in lower demand. If you’re seeking a specific model—particularly from older generations—you might have no choice but to buy the tray version.
