Unfortunately, there’s no built-in way in AWS to track which instances are running or which launch templates are using your shared AMIs in accounts you don’t own without their help or access. The AMI Usage feature can help you see reports showing which accounts are using your shared AMIs and how many resources, like EC2 instances or launch templates, are referencing them. You can specify the AMI ID and the account IDs you want to review, and the report will display the number of resources per account.
Keep in mind, though, there are some limitations. These reports are snapshots taken at a specific moment and might not include the latest activity. They show the resources that are referencing your AMI but don’t necessarily mean those resources are still running. Also, it’s not possible to get live, accurate counts of actively running instances in external accounts without cooperation from those account owners.
To get real-time, precise information about running instances or active resources using your AMIs in other accounts, you need their help. They would have to give you access or share that information through some other method. The AMI usage reports offer a good overview of which accounts are using your AMIs and give you an idea of usage patterns, but they don’t give detailed, real-time data about ongoing resources in accounts you don’t manage.
