Step 1: Capture the Evidence with a Screenshot

Your first step should be to gather evidence. A screenshot is an effective way to document the scam.

  • How to Take a Screenshot on iPhone:

    • For iPhones, press the Side Button and the Volume Up button at the same time. You can find detailed instructions here.
  • What to Include in Your Screenshot:
    • Include the scammer’s phone number, name, and the date and time you received the call or message.

Locating Information:

  • For Phone Calls: Find the “i” icon next to the call log for detailed information.
  • For Text Messages: Tap the sender’s number at the top and then select “info” for more details.

Step 2: Report the Scam

Once you’ve captured all the necessary information, it’s time to report it.

  • Reporting to Apple:

    • If you are an Apple user, attach the screenshot to an email and send it to [email protected]. Make sure to include a brief explanation of the scam.
  • Reporting to the Federal Government:
    • Federal Trade Commission (FTC): You can report scams at this link.
    • Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): Visit IC3.gov to file a complaint.
