If you’re trying to upgrade your server to the latest Intel CPUs by moving your WHM/cPanel to a new Lightsail instance, here’s a simple guide to help you get it done smoothly.
First, you should create a snapshot of your current server. To do this, go to the “Snapshots” section in Lightsail, and make a manual snapshot. Wait until the snapshot is fully created before moving forward.
Next, take that snapshot and use it to launch a brand-new instance. When creating the new server, select a larger or equivalent bundle size to ensure it can handle everything smoothly. Once the new instance boots up, set it up with your existing configurations, making sure all your websites and services are working correctly.
After confirming everything runs well on the new server, it’s time to decommission the old one. Delete the old instance to stop incurring extra charges.
However, sometimes after switching over, you might find that your sites aren’t reachable despite accessing your cPanel or WHM dashboards successfully. This can happen if the DNS or IP address settings aren’t properly aligned after the move. Make sure your static IP is correctly attached to the new server and that your DNS records point to this IP.
If you experience issues like seeing the default page instead of your sites, double-check that your domain configurations match the new server’s IP. You might also consider bypassing snapshots and using the cPanel transfer tool, which can sometimes be more reliable for moving accounts, especially if snapshots aren’t working as expected for you.
In summary, create a snapshot, launch a new instance from it, configure everything properly, and ensure DNS settings are correct. If problems persist, using the transfer tool instead of snapshots might be the better route. This approach generally provides a cleaner migration and reduces issues related to DNS or IP configurations.
