If your computer shows a problem after a Windows update, and instead of reaching the login screen, it just beeps once and then shows a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left corner, don’t worry. This is a common issue caused by certain Windows updates that can interfere with your system’s startup.
Here’s a simple way to fix this problem. First, turn off your computer completely. Then, turn it back on and immediately press the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears. If that doesn’t work, try pressing the F11 key or the Esc key; it depends on your model.
Once you see the recovery or troubleshooting menu, choose “Startup Settings.” Then click on “Restart.” When your PC restarts, select “Enable Safe Mode.” This mode starts Windows with minimal drivers and can help you undo the recent update that caused the problem.
After booting into Safe Mode, go to the Start menu, type “Device Manager,” and press Enter. Look for any devices with a yellow warning sign, especially display drivers. Right-click on any problematic drivers and select “Update Driver” or “Uninstall Device.” You can also consider uninstalling the recent Windows update through Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates.
Once you’ve undone the problematic update, restart your computer normally. Most of the time, this method allows your system to boot properly again. If it still doesn’t work, you might need to do a system restore to revert to an earlier point when your computer was working fine.
Remember, if you’re unsure or uncomfortable doing these steps yourself, it’s best to contact a professional technician. They can help fix the issue safely and ensure your computer is back to normal.
