AWS Lambda: Solve CloudWatch Log Group Issue with Existing Role

If you’re working with AWS Lambda and notice that your logs are not appearing as expected, it might be due to how the IAM role associated with your Lambda function is configured. For example, if your IAM role, such as “lambdaA-role-123,” is set up to create logs only in a specific log group, like “/aws/lambda/lambdaA,” then all logs from functions using this role will be directed there.

By default, AWS Lambda automatically creates a log group named after your function, such as “/aws/lambda/yourFunctionName,” the first time the function runs. However, if the IAM policy attached to your role limits log creation or log stream permissions to only certain log groups, your logs might not appear where you expect.

Here’s what you can do to fix this issue:

  1. Expand Log Permissions: Update the IAM policies attached to your role to allow creating and writing logs to multiple log groups. For example, you can set permissions to allow creating logs in different groups like “/aws/lambda/lambdaA” and “/aws/lambda/lambdaB.” Make sure the policy grants access to all relevant log groups.

  2. Use Multiple IAM Roles: If you want separate log groups for different Lambda functions, assign each function a dedicated IAM role with permissions to only its specific log group. This keeps logs organized and avoids conflicts.

  3. Configure Log Output in Lambda Settings: You can also change the log group directly in your Lambda function settings. Specify the desired log group so that all logs are sent to the intended destination. This is especially helpful if you want all logs to go to a single central log group.

When you create a Lambda from the console, it often gets a default IAM policy suited to that function. Reusing this role across different functions without adjusting permissions can lead to log output issues, as the role may only have access to certain log groups.

In a recent experience, I found that my Lambda functions correctly output logs, and changing the log group or updating IAM permissions resolved common issues. However, if logs are still not appearing, double-check that your Lambda’s IAM role has the correct permissions for the log groups you want to use, and verify your Lambda’s log configuration.

Remember, ensuring proper permissions and clear configuration can help your logs appear exactly where you want them, making it easier to monitor and troubleshoot your AWS Lambda functions effectively.
