Marathon Silk is one of the many types of currencies and resources in the game, mainly used to unlock items in Reward Passes. We don’t have all the details yet about these passes, but think of them as similar to decks in Arc Raiders or Warbonds in Helldivers 2. They will likely include cosmetics and resources that you can earn with Silk to customize your Runner Shells. While Silk isn’t useful during server slam, I’ve summarized everything I’ve learned about this currency and its potential uses below.
Silk functions as the Reward Pass currency in Marathon, which means you’ll be able to use it to unlock rewards in the full version of the game. However, during the Marathon server slam, there are no Reward Passes or premium items to spend Silk on, so it doesn’t have any purpose right now. You don’t need to worry about it at this stage since nothing from the server slam carries over to the full game. Also, note that the in-game description suggests that Silk isn’t used to unlock the Reward Passes themselves—it might require a different premium currency, but we’ll see when the full game launches.
You earn Silk in small amounts—10 each time you level up your season by gaining experience points. The main ways to earn XP are by defeating enemies and successfully extracting, which will help you accumulate Silk. If you pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition of Marathon, you’ll start with 200 Silk and receive a free Premium Rewards Pass Voucher, allowing you to get a pass to spend your Silk on without extra cost.
In the current build from the server slam, Silk has a cap of 140, with an overflow of 60, making the maximum effective total 200 Silk. It seems you might not be able to make a purchase exceeding 140 Silk at one time, but since the game doesn’t currently include Reward Passes to test this, we’re waiting on more details. I’ll update this guide with precise information once the game officially launches on March 5.
