A Hersir wields a long spear to keep enemies at a safe distance in Norse: Oath Of Blood. You usually start with this fighter early in the game, or you can recruit a new one by exchanging Hacksilver with allies.
The Hersir has special abilities that are unique to their fighting style. These abilities focus on protecting allies, dealing damage, providing buffs, and applying debuffs. They make the Hersir a valuable team member. Below are the top abilities to choose for a Hersir and how best to use them on the battlefield.
The Hersir is a combat unit you can add to your team when battling enemies alongside Sigrid and Gunnar. If you find this fighter type useful, you can recruit a new Hersir from allied villages that have them available.
Each allied village refreshes their resources and recruits every few turns, so keep an eye on the map for new opportunities to hire.
Hersir abilities are linked to their fighter type. As they level up, you can select between two ability paths: War-Chief or Skald.
During missions, fighters gain experience (XP) and can level up once they reach enough XP. The more they participate in fights, hit enemies, and achieve kills, the faster they’re likely to level.
To see how well a unit is performing, add new abilities, or change their equipment, visit the Hirdmen tab and select that unit. You can also adjust equipment before battles.
Abilities in the War-Chief column focus on defending allies and attacking enemies. In contrast, Skald abilities mainly weaken enemies with debuffs and strengthen your team with buffs. The choice depends on your play style, but here are some recommended abilities for a balanced approach:
| Ability | Type | Rank | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skull Splitter | War-Chief | Bondi | Deals 2-4 damage and dazes enemies, lowering their Reflex and Skill by 25 each. |
| Warden | War-Chief | Oathsworm | When Guard is active, automatically retaliate with an attack of opportunity if an enemy in range attacks. Great for defense and aiding nearby allies. |
| Flyting | Skald | Viking | Inflicts the Weak status on enemies for 3 turns, reducing their damage output by 50%. Use against strong or hard-hitting foes. |
| Helping Hand | War-Chief | Housecarl | When flanking an enemy, triggers an attack of opportunity from a nearby allied unit. |
| Sound Of Death | War-Chief | Legend | Has a 60% chance to make nearby allies trigger an attack of opportunity against enemies. Repeating it costs 2 Action Points (AP) and increases the success chance by 20% each time. |
| Gjallarhorn | Skald | Einherjar | Inflicts Vulnerable status on all enemies, making them take 50% more damage. Also heals allies by 25% health and helps them recover from being prone—a powerful boost in tough fights. |
If you want to redeploy units efficiently without wasting turns, Odin’s Chosen might be a better fit than Gjallarhorn.
The Hersir can be placed at the front line at the start of a battle or held back for a more defensive role. Thanks to their long spear, they can attack from two tiles away, making them effective as a close-to-mid-range attacker.
Position the Hersir near other allied units and leverage their defensive and passive abilities. Skills such as Warden, Helping Hand, and Sound of Death work best when the Hersir is actively engaged in combat.
