Off The Grid Overview
Created by film director Neil Blomkamp, Off The Grid is a free-to-play game that combines Battle Royale gameplay with Extraction Shooter elements. The game has many mechanics that can be confusing, but understanding them is key to winning.
This game features cyberlimbs, special abilities players can equip by finding cybernetic arms and legs. If you are new to the game, check out our beginner’s guide to learn the basics.
One crucial aspect to learn early is how to extract Hexes. Hexes are like lootboxes that provide random weapons, cyberlimbs, or cosmetics for your character. The tutorial covers this briefly, but it’s different in real matches.
First, look for Hexes. You can find them by opening boxes (which also provide money, ammo, and weapons) or by completing Hex Collector contracts. You can only carry one Hex at a time.
Always carry the Hex with the highest rarity!
After finding a Hex, look for a Hextractor, marked on your map. You can only extract one Hex at a time at each terminal.
When at the Hextractor, insert the Hex (you can also insert Hexes from teammates). The device’s screen will show a percentage, and you need to wait for it to reach 100%.
Be cautious, as all players receive a notification when someone starts an extraction. Enemies can hack your Hextractor by shooting at it and take your Hex.
The main goal is to extract as many Hexes as possible. Good news: you don’t have to win the match. As long as you extract Hexes, you can die and still keep them when you return to the menu.
How Currency Works
Unlike many live-service games, Off The Grid uses only one currency outside of matches: Gun. You need Gun to open Hexes, buy items, and claim rewards from the battle pass if you aren’t an OTG Pro member.
You can earn Gun by completing challenges, selling items in the market, and finishing matches. You will earn some Gun even if you lose, but it’s four times more if you are an OTG Pro member.
OTG Pro is a subscription service that gives you access to the battle pass, unique cosmetics, extra loadout slots, and increased Gun earnings. It costs $11.99 monthly.
Mute The Announcer
If you find the announcer’s voice annoying, you can mute it. Go to Settings, Audio, and adjust the Announcer Voice Volume to zero. You won’t miss any important match information.
Don’t confuse this with the Personal Assistant Volume, which provides helpful in-game event information.
Don’t Revive Your Teammates At The Beginning Of The Match
When you or your teammates are knocked down in Battle Extraction, you have a short time to revive them. Stay close and hold the Revive button. However, teammates can die if too much time passes or if they take more damage after being knocked down.
If they die, you can use a respawn terminal to pay and instantly bring them back to life. But it’s usually not worth it in the early match.
Off The Grid gives you free respawns at the start. As long as someone in your squad is alive, teammates can respawn automatically after a short wait.
Remember that Friendly Fire is always on, meaning you can accidentally harm your teammates.
When you drop into the game, you use a jetpack instead of a parachute. You can also deploy it while falling from heights.
Keep an eye on your Heat indicators. If they reach 100%, your jetpack stops working, and you may take fall damage.
Practice is needed to master the jetpack. It may feel strange initially, but it’s a valuable tool in battles.
You can use the jetpack to surprise enemies, change position during a fight, or escape from danger.
Shooting Range Practice
Don’t miss the Tutorial & Practice mode in Off The Grid, especially the Cyberlimbs Training. This is a great place to learn as it features moving targets.
You can test both cyberlimbs and weapons, which will help you prepare for real matches. Most weapons will feel familiar if you’ve played other shooters, but cyberlimbs will require practice.
You can switch between different loadouts during practice, allowing you to try all the cyberlimbs without entering a real match.
You can technically test your weapons and cyberlimbs in another arena, but the enemies are still, making it less practical.
Discovering The Best Cyberlimb
It’s vital to find out which cyberlimb suits your playstyle. While you can play using only guns, you’ll miss out on key features of the game.
I found traversal cyberlimbs to be the most useful. The hook is handy for reaching high places and escaping enemies. The running legs let you sprint quickly, which is great for staying out of the overload zone.
You can also run in circles around enemies for a fun strategy.
The legs that allow a big jump are decent for traversal. However, the Ghost Arm is the best for temporarily turning invisible.
There are also cyberlimbs focused on offense and defense. Offensive legs and arms can be tricky for beginners, but drones are effective at detecting or attacking enemies.
Finding A Free Loadout Must Be A Priority
Free loadouts occasionally drop on the map. These red devices descend and can be interacted with to pick up default or customized loadouts. This helps if you haven’t found good gear.
You can also request deliveries if you have enough Gun. You’ll see a blue icon in your inventory when this option is available.
Keep in mind that every player can interact with these loadouts.
Keep An Eye On The Market
Off The Grid features a market where you can buy and sell items using Gun. To buy, go to the Marketplace tab and explore your options.
To sell items, go to the Inventory tab and choose the item you want to sell. Set a price and duration for the listing. You will see a price trend chart for reference.
The game includes microtransactions, allowing you to buy bundles of Gun with real money to boost your starting funds.
Complete As Many Contracts As Soon As Possible
While playing, you’ll find an in-game currency called Rip. This currency is only for in-game use and disappears after each match.
Rip is used to revive teammates and buy loadouts. Loadout prices vary, but usually require at least 2,000 Rip.
You can earn Rip by finding small boxes, but completing Contracts is a more effective method. Contracts are side missions that offer good Rip rewards.
Contracts involve tasks like hacking servers or hunting players. They appear as icons on your map for easy navigation with your team. Completing these contracts can provide enough money for loadouts and revives.
